SUMMARY:

Join me for a winter up-and-back hike up to the open summit of Snowy Mountain (3,898 ft).  It is the highest peak in the Lower Adirondacks (south of the Adirondack High Peaks, where the more famous 46'ers live).  On a clear day there are wonderful views of Indian Lake and to the High Peaks to the northeast  from the rocky ledges.  There is also a restored firetower near the summit, which offers 360-degree views, as well as the remnants of the observer's cabin and spring house.  The trip is a total of about 7.5 miles with an approximate elevation gain of 2100 feet (there are some steep sections on the way to the summit).

Trailhead:  The trailhead is accessed via a parking lot on NY - Rte 30, about 6.5 miles south of Indian Lake.  Look for a grey Hyundai Elantra.  It is about 2+ hour drive from Albany and Utica (check Google Maps for specific times and directions).

What to Bring:  Please dress accordingly (non-cotton layers) for a day in exposed winter conditions (particularly on an open summit), bring your snowshoes (and other traction as desired) and wear appropriate boots with thick socks.  Also bring along snacks, water, lunch and anything else you may require for the day.

Afterwards:  We should be completed with the hike by 4-5 PM.  If there is sufficient interest, we'll cap the day off with dinner/drinks in the area afterwards.

Driving directions to the location and spot to meet at:
